Italian cookie recipe? Coated, not Ameretti cookies?

My boyfriend had a customer come to his store with these little Italian Amaretto Cookies. They were chewy and moist, and had a hard white sugary shell on them. I could taste a strong almond and amaretto flavor. They were not the recipe for ameretti cookies. They were dark in color on the inside, and white hard coating on the outside. DELISH. Any idea what this might be?
